Bright Block is an ambitious construction company that has made it their mission to construct in Houston with Houston residents and workers. They’re primarily focused on the commercial sector, building shopping centers, gas stations, and corner stores. Bright Block has the ambition however, to also enter the residential sector, creating apartment complexes and large communities. They required a website due to the large amount of growth they are currently experiencing and their minimal online presence. The client sent their business card for the website colors and gave full autonomy of the design. The only requirement given by the client was that the site must be developed mobile first. This is because most of their clients use their phones more than desktops. As such the main challenge for this website was creating it so that the experience viewing it on mobile would be just as exceptional as the experience viewing it on desktop.
The colors used in this website were orange, light blue, dark blue and white. Dark blue is the primary color, serving as the background color for the entire site. The reasoning behind this choice was the client’s request of matching the site background to their business card. White is the text color as it provides the best contrast against the darker background while also blending well with orange and light blue which are the logo colors. As mentioned before, since these two colors make up the logo, I used them as the two highlight colors for the site. Additionally, the colors complimented the dark blue primary color and white secondary color well. EB Garamond was the font I decided to use. This is because of two main reasons. First, it was a serif font. On a website such as this a sans serif font looked immature and unprofessional. Shifting to a serif font gave the website a much more professional and elegant style. Secondly, because of the way EB Garamond stands out among the rest of the elements on the page. This site uses a lot of straight lines and boxes with minimal rounded edges. As such EB Garamond, with its curvature in text, stands out and makes it easier to find and read.
I chose to use images from Bright Block’s current and past construction sites and projects. The reason for this is because while this is a company site, it also serves as a showcase of the company's work. In addition to having a designated portfolio section, including images throughout the site that show the company’s body of work would add to the company’s credibility and perceived expertise. The site is also built with lots of straight edges and lines. The reason behind this is because I chose to create the site to resemble a blueprint. By having straight lines extending from the sides and surrounding the portfolio showcase on the homepage, it echoes that theme of a blueprint while not being too overbearing.
The challenge presented by this project was to make the mobile experience of this site exceptional. Here’s how I handled it. I decided to make all elements on this site, aside from the images, small. I did this because on mobile, the essential information needs to be seen first, and should you have large elements they will be the ones taking the attention. Next, all animations are scroll-based animations. Meaning they happen regardless of platform, improving mobile experience. Finally, all text and content is centralized. This means that it’s all made so that it sits in the center of the screen. Finally, all images and animations are made so that they do not slow down mobile site load time, keeping a quick site load time.
